For years wireless service providers have been cleaning out consumer wallets with pricey cell phone contracts and hidden fees. Why continue to throw out money when it isn’t neccessary? With the rise of prepaid cell phone services, you don’t have to.
Many think of prepaid phone service as the poor man’s option and that the service and features are less than adequate. This isn’t true at all. Prepaid wireless services have come a long way since their introduction. Most prepaid phones receive service from the same exact towers that provide reception to your contract phone.
Most major wireless providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Alltel (now Verizon), Sprint, and many others offer prepaid cellular services now. And you’d be surprised by the rates they offer.

Alltel U Prepaid
Plans: Alltel U Prepaid offers three basic plan types. With the pay per minute plan, all calls are 15 cents per minute. There is a minimum 20 dollar initial balance. For each month of non-use, a fee of four dollars applies. The pay per day plan costs 75 cents per day, so between $22.50 and $23.25 per month. Subscribers can add a third feature for an additional 25 cents per day, and can further add a fourth feature for another 25 cents. Calls not covered by the voice usage options are 10 cents per minute. There is also a 20 dollar minimum initial balance. AT&T Prepaid Wireless
Plans: AT&T offers two styles of prepaid service. Pay As You Go is a traditional prepaid service with three tiers. The first is 25 cents per minute. The second is 10 cents per minute, but requires a 1 dollar per day access fee, which is charged only on days the phone is used. Customers with this plan can enjoy unlimited mobile to mobile minutes, and can add unlimited nights and weekends for $19.99 per month. The final tier is unlimited calling, which requires a $3 per day access fee on days the phone is used. Pick Your Plan allows customers to purchase a package each month, similar to monthly contract plans. The difference is that the money is used for all services — voice, messaging, data, downloads, etc. — so each package is advertised as having “up to” a certain number of minutes. The first package costs $29.99 per month and offers minutes at 15 cents each, so up to 200 each month. The second costs $39.99 and offers minutes at 13.3 cents each, up to 300 per month. Customers with this plan can enjoy unlimited mobile to mobile calling and 500 free night and weekend minutes. The third package costs $49.99 and offers minutes at 12.5 cents each, up to 400 per month. Customers with this plan can enjoy unlimited mobile to mobile calling and 3,000 night and weekend minutes. The final package costs $69.99 per month and offers minutes at 10.8 cents each, up to 650 per month. Customers with this plan can enjoy unlimited mobile to mobile and unlimited night and weekend calling.

There are a few others that you can check out as well. I personally use Alltel, which is now Verizon Wireless. The service is great. I get all the calling and texting features that I need for a decent price. I’ve been thinking about switching over to Boost Mobile, though. The $50 per month unlimited plan sounds very enticing.
One other service that I suggest everyone check out is Skype. Skype is a revolutionary service. A few devices are now offering the ability to use Skype. With it you can make free calls to and from anyone with Skype. There is no contract needed. You don’t have to spend a dime. You can also purchase a plan that will allow you to make calls to phones on other wireless networks for a very low price as well. You can find more information about Skype by going here: More Info About Skype
A few mobile devices that you can use Skype for free on are the Sony PSP, SkypePhone, and the Sony Mylo 2.
